The European Parliament has adopted its first reading position on the revised EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), supporting several important simplifications for businesses. Among the key points is a proposed exclusion of printed products (such as books and magazines) from the scope of the Regulation. This amendment was strongly advocated by publishers' organisations and represents a positive development for the European print and publishing sector.
Parliament also confirmed its support for a one-year postponement of the Regulation’s application for all companies and for limiting the obligation to store Due Diligence Statement reference numbers to the first downstream operator. These points bring greater feasibility for compliance.
The final text will now be negotiated between the Parliament, Council and European Commission, with the next decisive vote expected in mid-December.
